The sequel to Making Enemies. 1956 and the Hungarian uprising is brewing. Bobby Martineau has been posted to Budapest, from where he reports to London about the growing crisis. The Hungarians, he knows, are prepared to risk everything against their Soviet oppressors because they believe that the West will support them. However they, and Martineau, reckon without the cynical jockying for position in London, where whole nations can be sacrificed on the altar of career opportunity. Martineau's dilemma is then exacerbated by his deepening relationship with Eva, a woman well-known to both the Russian and Hungarian security forces, and with plenty of reasons for hating the regime.
